Heroin Abuse on the Rise

Officials report the abuse of opiates, mainly heroin, has risen at an alarming rate across the country, particularly among teenagers. Many “new” heroin users previously abused prescription opiate based pain relievers like hydrocodone, oxycodone, morphine, fentanyl, codeine, propoxyphene, and hydromorphone. There is a shift in not only their drug of choice, but also in demographics; heroin abuse is rapidly sweeping through rural and suburban areas.

DEA Agrees on Legislation to Control 26 Synthetic Drugs

The Drug Enforcement Administration this week commended House and Senate negotiators for agreeing on legislation to control 26 synthetic drugs under the Controlled Substances Act. These drugs include those commonly found in products marketed as “K2” and “Spice."

National HIV Testing Day

Every year local organizations across the nation engage with communities to promote early diagnosis and HIV-testing.  The National Association of People with AIDS founded the day in 1995 and continues to lead its implementation each year.  This year Horizon Health is providing free HIV and STD testing on June 27th from 5:00pm-8:00pm.  The event will take place at the Curries Woods Revitalization Center 65-67 Ruby Brown Terrace Jersey City, NJ.  Along with free testing, there will be music, raffles and food.

New Jersey Becomes 35th State to Initiate Prescription Drug Monitoring Program

New Jersey has awarded a contract to initiate the state’s prescription drug monitoring program, joining thirty-four other states that already have programs up and running.  Former Governor Jon Corzine initially signed enabling legislation in 2008 when New Jersey received a $350,000 grant to start its own program. 

This long awaited program requires pharmacies to collect and send data to the state for every prescription for controlled dangerous substances, including anabolic steroids and frequently abused painkillers like methadone and oxycodone.

National Online Directory of Permanent Prescription Drug Collection Boxes Launched
